Without the flashy graphics, you might mistake the vehicle for one of BMW’s traditional X5s, which offer 6- and 8-cylinder engine options. Introduced for the 2000 model year, the X5 begs to be driven aggressively like all Beamers. It’s not a sports sedan, but it is smooth and fast for a heavy sports utility with strong brakes and reasonable off-road skill. The xDrive35d diesel model joined the lineup in 2009 and takes away none of the X5’s sporty nature with its 265 horsepower and massive 425 pound-feet of torque. In fact, it boasts a faster zero-to-60 time – 6.9 seconds – than the 6-cylinder’s 7.8 time and is only half a second off the V-8’s sprint.
